CErtamen aenigmatum

The first "certamen" of Latin crosswords

Certamen Aenigmatum

The European Latin-Greek Festival, in collaboration with Hebdomada Aenigmatum, organized the first "certamen" (contest) of Latin crosswords.

The event took place on March 25th at 4.30pm, at the prestigious Ecole Normale Supérieure in Lyon, with the participation of 150 students from 6 French schools: Paris (collège Joan Manuel), Loire-Atlantique region (lycée Jacques Perrin Rezé), Rhone region (collège Bellecombe, collège Fénelon of Lyon, collège Pierre de Ronsard of Mornant, lycée René Descartes of Saint Genis Laval), and some students of the Pole of Ancient Declamation of the University of Lausanne (Switzerland).

The two ex-aequo winners are Leila Lopez (15 years old) and Léa Pipet (14 years old). They both solved the three games in only 9 minutes. The first professor in the top 6 was at 4th place. All 6 top spots were conquered by women: 4 students and 2 professors.

The 6 winners received a T-shirt with the logo of the Festival and the writing “Veni, lusi, vici” = “I came, I played, I won”, paraphrasing the famous sentence of Julius Caesar.

The objective of the initiative is to show the vitality of classic languages and the possibility of using them for fun and for the intellectual pleasure of everyday life.
